This page is to help educate people on the long-coated gene in Labradors

In November 2011 we had a litter of puppies 6 in all, 4 girls and 2 boys.  1 boy and 2 girls had correct coat (as described in the AKC Labrador Retriever Breed Standard) and 1 boy and 2 girls with the long-coat gene.  The long coat gene is a simple recessive trait, so 2 copies of the genes are required to express the long coat (one from each parent). 


This was the first time I had come across this in any of my litters.  After speaking with several Labrador Breeders they confirmed that they too over the years had run across this in at least one litter.  So I decided that being a responsible breeder I would research this and educate myself.  I will follow these puppies through their new owners with pictures and information.
